Bass amp speaker's volume per foot of distance from cabinet ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Does a bass amp's volume sound louder when standing several feet away from amp than if standing beside the amp ?

Does the size of speaker in the amp affect this distance ?
Does the angle of the cabinet affect this distance ?

I am trying ot decide what size speaker and what angle of cabinet would be best for using a combo amp as a stage monitor and sending the DI to the PA system. Audience volume would be from the PA system rather than the combo amp.

These questions are motivated by reading the TalkBass archives and seeing posts about "the bass wave form expands and sounds louder at back of audience than on stage" and "bass amp used as stage monitor sounded twice as loud 15 feet away on stage than when standing next to amp until I put it in a chair and angled it directly up at me."

If the size of speaker is a factor in the distance of volume, what would be the distance volume effect of using a 10 , 12, or 15 inch speaker ?

Is distance volume affected by amp being angled straight across floor or angled upward as a "kickback" cabinet design ?

Thanks

It can.

It's more affected by room dynamics and where your ears are.

This is no one answer to this. The general answer, whatever sounds best, is left to the reader to figure out.

First quote is incorrect. Second quote works. It's because you don't have ears in the back or your knees.

See first quote. It's not a factor. Bass waves don't take time to "expand". Nor do other sound waves.

Pressure decreases with distance from any speaker. That said, room dynamics play a huge roll in whether one spot is louder than another. As does pointing a sound source at your ears instead of your knees.
