Bass Cab for PA Sub?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about using a 15" Musicman Bass cab as a sub for our PA -with kick drum, etc. It has a front loaded EV15B at 200RMS. I have a biampable Crate (BX440H) head that will put out 225rms to this speaker Our mains are 2 EV powered 12's at 200w each.

Do you think this would be adequate at 300hz and under?
Or is that too much abuse for a Bass guitar speaker to handle?

It won't make the grade in the long term. It might help you limp through a few gigs.

Some bass speakers can handle more than others. Unfortunately that speaker can handle relatively little low end.

The EV 15B speaker starts to fall off rapidly below 60 Hz and it will fart out very easily if you push it below that.

Try it if you want but be aware just how little time it takes to blow it up.

Hi.

Depends of Your definition of a sub.

The 40-120 (ish) Hz reproduction of a MI bass cab is not enough to use it as a real sub, but if You just want some added bottom end for the satellites, that it will do.

You'll need a cross-over obviously, preferably crossed over at 120Hz or so, not 300. C-O point that high will create more problems than it will solve. IME/IMHO anyway.

Regards
Sam

Bass cabs are usually not very good in the lowest register (30-60hz)

The tops outrun your "sub". Way too little horsepower for getting appreciable 80Hz kickdrum thump. If you can eq that down and make do with kick beater noise at 120Hz then it can work for bass guitar. Don't shoot me if I didn't remember those frequencies correctly.
