Bass Head Power

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Fender 810 pro. I think continuous power is somewhere around 600W. Would a 150W all tube bass or guitar head push it without harm. I am currently using a Kustom Groove Bass head with no problems. I can get a tube head for a good price and was wondering if it would work.

Yes, there is no problem. Just remember that if you crank the amp to absolute max you may endanger the tweeter by sending it more wattage than it is rated for (it's a long story but that's the real deal). The rest of the speakers will be fine at any setting of the amp.

Couldn't the whole tweeter issue be solved if you turn the tweeter off? Or is there still a signal going to it?

Sure, turning off the tweeter would protect it from being overloaded, but I've also heard that in that case the crossover may be damaged. Depends on how well-made the crossover is, I suppose- I asked Genz about this on their Neox cabs and they said it would not be a problem.

I can't think of how any tweeter or crossover could be damaged by turning it off or down unless the L-Pad was horribly under rated.

Any ideas why?

No, it was just one of those things I'd seen repeated on here. If it's a myth I'll never mention it again.

If the L Pad is very undersized, in the lowest position many present ~8-12 ohms to the amp IF (big if) it is wired in front of the tweeter high pass crossover. This is not a good design principle, but there's a lod of odd stuff being sold on the open market. In this case, the L-Pad would get quite hot and would also load down the amp to unacceptable levels compared to placing the L-Pad after the crossover HPF and only dealing with dissipating the HF power bandwidth. I wonder if this is where the myth came from?

I can't think of anything else.
