I think it'll sound best right where it is ... in the closet.

I would have suggested the closet or the trash...
Never been a fan of a maximizer being used on a PA system, they sometimes can be used on a guitar rig with decent results.
But most of the time they just add un-wanted mud IMO.

It's a cheap 2 band EQ and a "processor" that employs very questionable science to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

I've yet to hear one fail to make a system sound worse - even when in bypass mode. It might have some utility as a channel insert, but not across the entire mix.

You have to buy Monster cables to plug this unit , then you'll hear the magic that this unit is designed to.
Plugging it with sub quality cables won't bring to life whatever it's supposed to do .
These units need mega $$$$ cable to work.

..... oh and you also have to use a power conditioner too !

Instant EQ in a box...great for marginal PA's but only when used in small doses. Works best in the L & R main inserts. Do not use in an Aux loop and blend as this causes some phasing (?) conflicts. I have a couple and an Aphex 104 equivalent which I'm currently using.

These do a LOT of EQ with treble boost that varies with the signal up to + 23 dB and a pile of fixed bass boost, so be careful where you put it so you don't clip something.

As I said, I havn't had it plugged up in a few years (probably 5 or more). What I do recall is that the most notable differences were when we played dancy cd's between sets. Don't recall it doing a whole lot for live music though. I also remember it eating up a bunch of headroom. I just hate to see it sit when I have a few open rack spaces. Is the Peavey Kosmos similar in function to the BBE product? And is that respected any more as a viable tool then the BBE?

The biggest problem with the SM's is they have controls which range from 0 - 10...there should be a pinstop at 3. Anything past that point is garbage, sounds processed, and as Gio pointed out, has the potential for clipping.

True. I think they're great for bringing vibrancy to recordings, (more on the guitars and vox than the bass) but I rarely go over "2".

Exactly. I stuck a spare in my buddy's karaoke rig: Behringer board, AudioCentron power amp, and two yard-sale Peavey enclosures. Sounds pretty good with canned tracks and accompanying vocals.

I usually A/B the dry and SM processed mixes and adjust the Low Contour so the bass responses are matched.

The SM is frequently touted as nothing but a treble & bass shelving unit, but I see them incorporated within the BBE line of bass preamps which already have dedicated treble & bass controls. For those who've owned or played a BBE, how do the two (EQ and Sonic Maximizer sections) vary in tems of tonal response?
