... is there really anything else to consider in this range? I really don't want to get a "kick drum" mic per se, and these are what I read to be the bad boys on the block for the most part. |

| | | | for a little cheaper, how about the audix D4?
i learned from this very forum of august bass players that typical dedicated kick drum mics have too much mid-scoop for bass cab mic'ing, so "floor tom mics" like the D4 might be just right.

The Beyer M88 is killer as well, and works really well on many, many sources. |

And you are wise to stay away from those kick drum mics.

AKG D12. If You can find one.
And before everyone (young ) mixes it up with D112, it's not the same mic and it wasn't designed as a bass drum mic. It just got the job because it's high (at the time) power handling. Great for brass and vintage vocals as well.
It's not a transparent mic though, none of the vintage designd are AFAIK.

Question, when using do you mostly use the mic "flat" or "level" facing into the cab, or do you use it at like a sitting up angle, where you're only hitting one side of the mic?
I'd assume the former, but just curious here. |

| | | Assuming itīs a PR-40, itīs end-firing. So, level. |

Like this, ignoring that the mic is slightly angled because I pulled on the cable before taking this pic....
