If you want to shell out a bit get an EV RE20. Brilliant for bass, guitar, kick and vocals. For something a bit cheaper your bog standard SM57 does the job!

The Heil PR40 has the best frequency response for mic'ing a bass cab.

And please be sure to not let anyone talk you into using a mic that's good for kick drum.

Not possible for a DI from your amp, or a DI Box? I have used a Shure 57 with the DI from my amp. Gives a great tone.

yeah, i always assumed kick drum mics were the ticket, but i've learned that you don't want the "scooped and hyped" response they usually have. look at "floor tom mics", like maybe the audix D4.

U47.

just kidding. I've tried a lot of mics and have an RE20 that I love. MD421 is good, but not as magical as the RE20. Nobody mentioned the SM7 which, if you have one lying around, does similar things to both those mics with it's own nice thing going on. If I was gonna go buy something, RE20. You can get them used for a great deal and they're indestructible.

But yeah, in the studio, RE20 up close, U47 in cardioid 5-25ft back.

just looked up the specs on the Heil PR40... freq response down to 28Hz. i'll be checking that out

RE20 for me.. But Jimmy M says that Heil is cool.. I will have to trust him he has a good grasp on things of that nature.

I only use the EV on my rig. To me anything else just doesn't do it. I use a mix of the EV with a DI so that I can make sure my effects and the top end get through. If I don't want to mess with finding space for another mic stand, I'll go DI, which is often. But when I'm in a great sounding room that has a stage with a nice tight clean sound, I do like what the EV brings to the party. Really, if I didn't have the EV, I'd probably never mic.

A microphone on a cabinet in a live situation? Certainly not something I'd recommend. A DI is really a much more appropriate tool for that particular application.

The AKG D112 is good. I've seen some live engineers use that mic. But if I were in a recording studio, I'd prefer to use an EV RE-20 on the cabinet.

EV just came out with a lower cost version of the RE20 called an RE320...just got one in the mail to beta test...will post impressions as soon as I get a chance to try it...Jimmy is right about the Heil as well. Beyer M88 is popular...I like RE20's

I was wondering how long it would take for the DI is better/Use a kick drum mic advice to pop up.

Good thing I haven't had to shell out for one of these yet, since I rarely play big enough places where I need to go through the PA. Holy fudge, these mics are expensive.
