Building Speaker Towers stands...

Sign in to disble this ad
So everyones advice is to stack the subs on 1 side ... so now what do you do with your dual 15 mains to get them off the ground?

They are too heavy and akward for speakers stand..I suppose I could place them on the stage in some venues but really I need to get them 3 ft off the ground I guess...

anyone build something that is portable and easy to put together at the gig?

Thanks for everyones advice....

While not the most visually appealing thats a nice idea Vinny..I guess you could cover em up if need be.

Hi.

We built a pair of road cases with the drummer for my mains (18"+12"+2*1") back in the day, about 40cm high only though.

Regards

One of my first rules for portable club PA: don't buy mains that you can't pole mount. Or easily truss. Hardly anybody really needs dual 15" woofers for mains anyway. Get good subs and cluster them, and then actively cross over to mains with good 12" woofers. It's easy enough to find 12" drivers that are just as sensitive, handle tons of power when crossed properly and perform just as nicely down to where the subs take over anyway.

Cabs with 12" woofers also perform better above 1K Hz, which makes it easy to design two-way boxes with superior dispersion without the boxes requiring larger horn lenses and more expensive compression drivers.

And then, make sure you have good subs that can keep up with however much you have going on with mains... If you need more, you should probably be looking at modular curvelinear array systems.

Thanks for the assesment Greenboy but I already own...
a bunch of gear hear are my choices for mains:

carvin PM 15s 3 year old version of LM15 400 wats
carvin LS2153 not exactly but older model..2 15s and a horn
or I own 1 LS 1503 and i could add another...

none of these have 12's as you suggest..

I would love to start from scratch and just buy QSC K series 12s and subs and be done with it but $3500 isn't just falling out my back pocket ( Although I could sell an Alembic, I guess)

I use the heavy duty keyboard stands, I place a 3/4" square cut plywood on top of the stand an then the JBL JRX125 speaker goes on top of it

Jastacey, if I wanted to go that high I could use speaker stands.. I only need to get 2 - 3 ft off the ground, I am thinking of building storage boxes to carry wires and stuff in with wheels and put them on those.

Your best bet is either the roadcase idea so the cases do double duty as cases and stands, or the folding scaffold that Vinny D posted so they don't take up quite so much space in the truck/trailer.

How about putting these on speaker poles? If they sound good with your subs then it seems to me that you'd be done and save some cash and your back with a lighter load-in/out.

+1 on actively crossing them over with the subs so the mains don't carry the lows.

I found these on another thread. They're the Ouick Lok WS540's but not sure if its a current or discontinued item.

Edit: well, its still listed in their online catalog:
