CHEAP monitor

I will be playing in the orchestra pit in a local high school musical in a few weeks. I'll be playing my acoustic bass guitar (amplified, of course). When I played it with an orchestra in the past I found I could really use some sort of monitor as it was hard to hear myself with the rest of the orchestra, and I suspect I may be in the same boat with this situation (the amp had to be in front of me or exactly next to me to avoid feedback).

I am not really playing out otherwise (though I'd like to be, and hope this might lead to some other things) and am focusing my efforts on the double bass right now, but I am interested in finding a way to hear myself in this show as cheaply as possible. (If I need something good later, or if playing out becomes a regular thing, I'll look into a better system then). I figured I could use the Line Out on my bass amp to connect some sort of monitor.

+1 if I can use whatever I use here with the pickup on my double bass to hear myself with my current orchestra.

Suggestions?

Some amps have headphone jacks that don't cut out the speaker when you plugin headphones.

If you have an iPhone, you can strap it to the tail and use it as an hearing aid. Put in one ear bud.

I have a line out jack on the amp. I don't want to use a set of headphones, but an ear bud would work- I have to hear the rest of the pit orchestra too. I don't have an iPhone.

There are many personal monitors out there. Don't know what your price point is. The model I use all the time is: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...system-monitor

Might be more than you want to spend, but you're essentially looking for a powered personal monitor. I believe Mackie also make a few that are just fine.

The Galaxy won't handle your bass that well. They are amazing for voice!

The pit bassists I work with usually send me a DI to FOH before any amp signal, and usually just turn their amp towards their face at a volume low enough not to cause volume wars with the other players in the pit.
