choosing the right speakers and cab for me! help!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, Im looking at deffintly adding more low end to our speaker set up with our P.A. mainly looking for more bottom deffinition from our kick drum, bass guitar, and possibly a synth. i have been researching this for a while, and dont know weather to buy a sub with low pass filters 45-800hz. or using speakers 38-2.4khz. i want to add great deffinition and want alot of massive bottom end and wondering if i should just make a cabinet with tweeters? I would like to use 18" or 15" speakers. and would like to do a 2x cabinet or 2 1x. also looking to take these on the road too, just to have OUR sound. i am just not sure what exactly would be right for me. any help or ideas would be greatly appriciated! Thank You!

Ignore the specifications, as most of them are wishful thinking. Choose based on the experience of others.

The bottom end from a "sub" on the floor will be a lot better than that from a "full range" speaker that's up high enough that the highs don't deafen everyone.

What are you using now?

How much do you want to spend?

How loud do you need to be?

Right now we have nothing for bottom end. just 2-15 jbl stage and 2 random monitors to hear ourself.

I am looking to spend up to nearly $1000

and I want it to be loud enough where it sounds great but doesnt drown out the highs. Massive though.

Probably won't get massive for a $1000.00. You would need subs, amp and a crossover or else powered subs with a built in crossover.

When you go on "tour", if they have a sound system, your subs won't be used or needed. Sound guy won't touch it.

A sub has to be integrated into a P.A. You can't really throw one up on stage somewhere with another system and expect it to sound good.

Here are a few of threads you might want to take a look at:

Buy used and locally. You may have to compromise as I rarely see powered subs on CL but I can always find passive enclosures by the boatload. Figure on:

(2) 18" (or 15") sub enclosures $500-600

Crossover $100-150

2400 power amp $250-300

Probably won't be top-of-the-line stuff but it will get the job done if you know what you're doing.

If you get more than one sub, check out the sound dispersion graphs in this TB thread: Sub stage placement w plots/graphs

Stacking the subs is the way to go.
