Custom Molds for In-Ear Monitors

Sign in to disble this ad
I use the Shure PSM 200 in-ear system with E2 headphones. Despite the criticisms I read about this system, it works great for me. However, my ears get sore from the fit of the head phones (been playing 4 set shows - ugh!) and I would like to try some custom molds. Has anyone ever used this company:

Same company, different link:

http://www.hearyourself.com/

They claim to send you a "mold kit" that you use yourself and then send back to them. For $110.00 I'm thinking of giving it a try. Anybody have any experience with this company or can suggest someplace else to try?

Thanks is advance.

I know I'm late getting to this, but its important for everyone considering custom montors or earplugs:

I'm a fully licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist, also known as an audioprosthologist in some areas. I make ear impressions all the time, and there's a few things you should know. First, its impossible to make a good impression of your own ear. Someone else needs to make it for you. Second, if the person making an impression of your ear isn't good at it, you risk more than a wasted impression; most likely your eardurm will be completely ruptured, and you'll never hear out of that ear again, short of getting a cochlear implant (which is about as fun to have as it sounds).

So, you really need to go to a professional and have them make the mold. Steer clear of audiologists; not to knock them, but they really are trained at performing a wide array of diagnostic tests, and things like earmolds are secondary to them. They are almost always more expensive as well. Go see an HIS or auidoprosthologist like myself. They almost always have a few lines of in ear monitors they can sell, and they deal with signal processing whenever they're not making ear molds. We know what you want in a sound system that fits in your head.

If you're insanely lucky, you might get an HIS like myself who plays bass and already has monitors. Or you can always take a little trip to see me personally

I would also definately suggest going to see an ear doc to get the molds done.

1. It will be hard for you to know how far the stopper is supposed to go in your ear -- it will feel like it is way to far when it is most likely not but then again, you don't want to go to far...
1. They're not going to skrew your ear.
2. You'll get a proper mold and they will know if it isn't deep enough, etc.
3. It's not going to cost you much more, if any.

(I got my molds payed for by my health insurance -- as "Hearing Protection")

Also, if you will be singing at all with your molds in, do a mouth-open impression rather than a closed mouth.

Thanks for the info. Ben-Jammin. I am in the market for molds now myself and had a quick question. I sing backup sometimes but not often. I was wondering how your molds fit when you are not singing? You had mentioned to have mouth open when getting mold done if you sing at all. Thanks!
