I have used the JDI as a speaker level DI in the past with excellent results...

Odd, My U5 works well in that roll...

Fwiw, I dig the Radial stuff as well.

So was there ever a definitive answer on this? JDX, Countryman, etc.? A DI that will serve to load the amp as well as send the signal to FOH?

None of the DIs mentioned will act as a load. if you want one that does you should check out the Palmer speaker sims.

True, but if the OP is always going to be using a cab with the head, the JDX is the way to go.

I prefer the JDI. The JDX needs a power supply and can be noisy. JDI is simple and dead quiet.

as to agedhorse's warning about bridged amps and class D amps maybe having Bad Things Happen with DIs in line between the amp and speaker, i think the "tell" is any mono amp with lots of power that won't do 2Ω is likely an internally bridged design.

this brings us back to the idea that there's little point in putting the DI in the speaker line with solid state amps anyway, though. a preamp out will get you all the amp's character at safe levels.
