In Ear Monitors For Bass Players

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what to do.

I went with the Dual Driver Livewires initially and was extremely disappointed. The cables they are using now were problematic for me (2 bad cables in a row) and the bass response just wasn't there for me.

I sent them back and they changed them over to the Alclair XB's.. While the bass response was a little better, it still doesn't cut it. I really have to listen for the bass in the music and my bass just sounds very thin and without much body.

So... what are you guys using? I want deep bass and punch. I want my bass to sound like a bass...

Thoughts and comments are very welcome.

I use the Future Sonics M5 in-ears and my bass sounds exactly the same in my ears as it does coming from my amp. The low B on my six-string is full and clear, the growl and mwah of my fretless is just as sweet.

CBabb...

Are you practicing with the IEM... as in put all amps on ice?

This is a common "complaint" when folks convert to IEM....

I kind of related it to the first time we pick up a 5 string... most of us need to commit a time period to acclimate.

The issue you may have is perception... have you found a set of practice headphones etc that's acceptable?

Are you in "control" of the "more me" mix?

Are you sure you are getting a good seal on the in-ears? Without them completely sealing in your ear canal, your bass response will be very disappointing. If you have the pieces in your ears and you can still hear normal conversation, you are most likely not getting a seal. Our drummer had this problem, he' say the in-ears sounded weak, but he'd only have them half-way into his ear.

Even with somewhat cheap in-ears, if the seal is good, you will get plenty of bass (assuming there is adequate bass in your mix!).

Possibilities:

You are used to too much bass.

The IEMs aren't sealing.

The bass ports are blocked.

A friend had a bad seal on the first set, and port blocking on the re-do.

I use triplefi 10's from a presonus board so my sound can be tweaked without bugging foh.. I also prefer the foam seals as they "stick" and seal better. Plugged into a rolls box with line out from amp plus some signal from the board.

Same here. I am very pleased with M5s. I also use these foams:

So VERY pleased with 1964 Ears Quads; tone and lack of hearing damage...how nice!

Diesel and I are on the same Triple Fi 10/comply foam bus! I haven't heard better for my 4 or 5 string! They are pretty reasonably priced via Amazon or EBay, and the cables are replaceable as needed. No issues with mine at all! Highly recommend for the triple driver performance. I also use Presonus for mixing and can't fathom playing any other way!

Triple Fi 10's remolded by 1964ears.com. crazy good straight out of my Rolls box... I think most of what I lose is due to the wireless IEM.

hey rocksolid I had the same issue and the people at Galaxy told me I could use a Rolls box between the amp and the Galaxy and it boost up the signal nicely.I have controll there and on my hip.If you got a mic amp try it out.

Cheers for the thought. volume isn't the issue so much as sound quality. It isn't terrible but I do notice a difference

I use Shure SE215 and SE425, not custom mold but great seal and isolation, thus very good sound for rather cheap IEM

After looking around at reviews for about a month, I went with JH audio JH7s. Unfortunately i have got them in yet to review but they should arrive in the next week or so and I'll update you guys. So far I have been using shure SE215's with custom ear molds (http://www.howtogeek.com/57481/how-t...-ear-monitors/ a cheap $15 way to use molded silicone ear plugs to mod existing universal IEMS) however was ready for an upgrade to multi-driver.

I have a set of the JH7 and LOVE them. The group I play with uses no amps on stage and relies only on the iem set with our own personal mixer. I play 5 string and the drummer has a killer gretsch american custom kit. It all goes into the mix and i have yet to overdrive them. My bass sounds great through a radial bassbone for some added kick and then to the mixer and ears. Can't say enough great things about JH too. Hope you have the same experience!
