My bass is an extremely smooth sounding instrument. Sometimes too smooth. I want to be able to get a little more punch out of it and was hoping to be able to do it with an EQ. How would I set an EQ to get maximum punch?

400 hz is a punchy mid range and 2k add a high mid punch. 8-- almost always sound better cut. Also, what sounds good alone doesn't necessarily sound good with other instruments.
You have to work with it and find what works best. |

What would work well for a P-bass with flats into an SVT isn't going to work so well for a Fodera with steel rounds going into an Epifani rig.
In general, as has already been discussed, boosting low mids (I like 200-300 or so) will add some growl, and try bringing the gain on your amp up as high as you can go without actually causing the amp to clip. |

I am using a Ibanez SR1200 all original from 94. It has a J in the bridge and a p in the neck, active Ibanez pups and EQ. Honestly the smoothest bass I have ever played. It kind of freaked me out a bit at first, but then I was really able to connect with the smoothness of it. Every bass I had before that was loaded with punch, so this is a big adjustment. I run into a PEavey TNT 115 for stage volume, and into the front of the house for overall volume. FOH through the xlr out on the front of the amp. I run into a compressor.
I guess I am kind of just looking for more generalized how to EQ a little more punch into this set up.

Again, I'd try boosting your low-ish mids, and maybe add in a bit of treble as well. |

Some say "My Pbass" is punchy.. some would note thier Wal.
Start with your strings and hand technique... What are you using?

What compressor are you using? A decent compressor which is poorly adjusted will blunt the front-end attack....which is not always a bad thing depending on the desired effect.
