EQ ? More punch

Sign in to disble this ad
My bass is an extremely smooth sounding instrument. Sometimes too smooth. I want to be able to get a little more punch out of it and was hoping to be able to do it with an EQ. How would I set an EQ to get maximum punch?

Emphasize the low mids, and use more abrupt finger-muting on each note.

It's not so simple. Some low mids add punch, some make it "woofy" sounding. It also depends on your bass. It also depends on what YOU consider "punch."

400 hz is a punchy mid range and 2k add a high mid punch. 8-- almost always sound better cut. Also, what sounds good alone doesn't necessarily sound good with other instruments.

You have to work with it and find what works best.

If you have dual pickups, try orienting towards the bridge pick up, then increasing the volume a bit.

It would help us a lot if you told us what your setup (Bass, strings, amp, effects, ect.) you're using. What would work well for a P-bass with flats into an SVT isn't going to work so well for a Fodera with steel rounds going into an Epifani rig.

In general, as has already been discussed, boosting low mids (I like 200-300 or so) will add some growl, and try bringing the gain on your amp up as high as you can go without actually causing the amp to clip.

Good word Bassman. I am using a Ibanez SR1200 all original from 94. It has a J in the bridge and a p in the neck, active Ibanez pups and EQ. Honestly the smoothest bass I have ever played. It kind of freaked me out a bit at first, but then I was really able to connect with the smoothness of it. Every bass I had before that was loaded with punch, so this is a big adjustment. I run into a PEavey TNT 115 for stage volume, and into the front of the house for overall volume. FOH through the xlr out on the front of the amp. I run into a compressor.

I guess I am kind of just looking for more generalized how to EQ a little more punch into this set up.

You may be overcompressing your signal. That can take lots of punch and texture out of your tone. Try backing off on that a bit.

Again, I'd try boosting your low-ish mids, and maybe add in a bit of treble as well.

No one inparticular.

Its one of the newer looking ones, red trim, has a 15 and a tweeter. Black metal speaker cover.

reason I ask is this is a very relevant question.

Some say "My Pbass" is punchy.. some would note thier Wal.

Start with your strings and hand technique... What are you using?

All of the above. There's a lot of life in the 110 - 250 hz region. A single band para EQ would help immensely.

What compressor are you using? A decent compressor which is poorly adjusted will blunt the front-end attack....which is not always a bad thing depending on the desired effect.

This, plus pick (with fingers or pick) closer to the bridge.

Although I just tried some cheapo picks by the pounds strings and they are bright and punchy as hell on my bass. Look them up, I think they're about $10 a pack.
