A Few Tone Questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello guys.

Generally, I like my tone, but I wanted to get some input from you guys on what you like to do for a particular genre, in this instance, Ska, Jazz, and Funk (Totally unrelated, but I was just curious.) With my bass , these are the EQs I would use. Keep in mind too that I would probably switch basses also if I had the option. Here's my current setup:

Ibanez SR Prestige 6-String (Bart soap bar pickups with Bart active preamp) -> GK MB112 combo
(I also have a Fishman Pro-EQ at my disposal, but pointless with an active EQ imo)

Tone ideas:

Ska -
Pickup - Neck or Both
Bass - 7/10
Low-Mids - 7/10
Hi-Mids - 4/10
Treble - 5/10

Jazz (Walking. Solo would be similar to Funk) -
Pickup - Bridge (Neck if it's a darker tune)
Bass - 6/10
Low-Mids - 6/10
Hi-Mids - (Sweepable mids so this isn't an option.)
Treble - 2/10

Funk -
Pickup - Bridge (Both for slap)
Bass - 6/10
Hi-Mids - 6/10
Low-Mids - (N/A)
Treble - 6
(This is more of a Jaco tone than say a James Jamerson tone.)

Do you guys have any suggestions on some things I could do for these genres? I'm just searching for tone ideas so anything is fair game (New gear or changing eq), but I would seriously appreciate any feedback. And sorry for the tl;dr users, haha.

Thanks!

I suggest leaving the amp set one way and just altering the tone with your hands. If you want to change tones up for a practice situation and/or recording, that's cool. But doing a different EQ set up for each genre, is not necessary at all. Adjust the pickup balancer and move your hands around for a new tone to mess with - you will be surprised how easy it is to find a new tone in seconds.

Good bass tone starts with your hands.

That's usually what I do. All those tone options I described above are actually on my bass, not on the amplifier (Hence pickup selection and such). I was just more or less asking some cool new ideas for some of the genres I posted.

I set amp with DBX 163x in send/return
-8 to -10 compression at loudest style playing slap or aggressive picking.
Treble 0
Bass 0
Mid parametric -3 to -6 at 400-800hz

Passive bass:
Pu balance 0. 1 hum 1 sc bridge
Vol wide open treble half way down

Play with a pick. Then for mellower ballad type styles I turn treble all the way on and use fingers instead of pick. Slapping style them same. Flatwound strings.

Palm muting, slight PU balance changes, pick or fingers and how aggressive I play with some treble adjust on bass is all I need.

Are you referring to a ska tone?
