You definitely would with a P style bass.
I get
really close, with my Jazz bass, playing right over the front pickup and leaning a bit more on the front than the back pickup. I'm only bumping the mids a
touch and cutting the highs some to get rid of the click that comes from the aggressive right hand technique required to get the strings to "bark" a bit--almost like a thumb slap. I use a MXR M-80 with a nice mix of (30/70 ?) distortion to clean signal and the drive turned up about 1/3. The settings will vary according to the output of the bass, of course. I tried to get the same sound out of my Music Man and couldn't.
