Going through the PA

My current set up is a Fender Jazz going into a Sans Amp RBI then into the board. I have my own monitor mix and I can show up to a gig and walk in, all in one trip (priceless).

My previous rig was an Eden WT-405 and a XLT210, I loved this setup, it had the tone I liked and just sounded nice (but too heavey). I DI'd into the board.

I bought the RBI based on so many favourable reviews. At first I ran into the front of the Eden, the tone was ok but I prefered my Eden tone (the RBI is a bit of a tone sucker). Now I run the RBI straight into the board (purely because of the weight savings, I can't lug the Eden around any more).

I am getting used to the preamp into PA concept and I can live with hearing myself through a monitor but I can't get used to the "depleted mids".

Here's my question, is the whole concept of running into the PA and through a monitor killing my mids or is it the RBI's fault (or both)? What other pre-amps (in the same price range) should I be looking at?

Thanks

Most likely the RBI. I use an RBI and I have no issues with my mids, but you are not me and it is a widely known fact that the RBI lacks the mid control of the RPM. Might be that you ought to sell off the RBI and get an RPM.

Mine (RBI) does have a mid controll but doesn't give me the mids I am looking for. On a different note, I have read from other users that they use the "blend knob". Should I be running into two channels of the PA?

They all have mid knobs, but the frequency which they affect is fixed. The RPM has an extra mid control. Also FYI, noon is not flat, try around 9 o:clock for flat. The blend knob simply affects the amount of clean signal versus affected signal.

No, one channel of the PA is typical.

If you do a search there has been a lot of threads regarding RBI v RPM. It would definitely be worth your while to read them. Also worth your while to learn exactly how your unit functions before deciding whether or not you like it.

As I said, I use an RBI through an Ampeg 810 ( The one with darker sounding speakers from the early 2000s) and I get all the mid I need out of mine. YMMV
