Good ElectroVoice (EV) mics?

Sign in to disble this ad
A group my band works with scored a sort of sponsorship with EV. I'm not entirely sure of the details other than the fact it results in substantial discounts.

Anyway, we need some mics and I know next to nothing about EV mics other than the RE-20.

We need some good guitar mics, and maybe vocal mics too. I think the RE-20 would probably be out of our price range, and maybe a bit fragile too. I know they were talking about the Raven for cab mics, but that's all I know.

Any one with experience with EV mics have any recommendations?

I use some Electro-Voice N/D967 microphones. They are great mics.
Their claim to fame is having the highest gain before feedback compared
to other mics.

Electro-Voice had actually discontinued the microphone in 1999. They got
so many complaints from sound engineers for dropping it that they
reintroduced the microphone in 2003.

The 767a is a very good vocal mic, both from sound and wash/feedback rejection standpoints (and available pretty cheap used).

So far, every comment I've seen about the reissued PL80a has been VERY positive. At one time multi-packs were selling for very low prices.

The 478's precedessors seem to have been well likes for toms and amps, so hopefully the 478 is at least as good.

The PL44 looks like a nice form factor, but I've not read any comments on it.

+1000 on the 967. My whole band liked mine so much they all got them. I got into these years ago when a female singer I was working with had one. I had been using Shure Beta58's for years. I plugged her mic into my cord/channel and was amazed at the improvement. It's relative gain is also hotter. I even own extras (I've picked up a couple used cheap).

The 767 mentioned above is a double edged sword. At low sound levels it sounds great as it's frequency response is up in the 20,000Hz range (most stage mics start to top out at around 14,000 to 15,000Hz...for a reason). However, all that extra top end response makes it prone to feedback at higher volume levels.

Good input, thanks all. Anyone have any experience with the Raven for micing guitar cabs? Or other good EV mics for guitar and bass cabs?

I have been using two RE-20s for kick and floor tom for over 20 years -- not fragile by any means!

For vocals, I've been using Electro-Voice RE-510 condensors for 5 years, and hear nothing but compliments on them.

I have no experience with the Raven for guitar cabs - IMO, the bandwidth requirement for guitars is much less important than the durability. I've been very happy with Sennheiser E604s for many years

I've used the Raven quite extensively as a general-purpose mike - used it on vocals, acoustic instruments, cabs and even woodwinds, both in the studio and live.

BUT I've replaced my three Ravens with Cardinals now. Why? Because everything the Raven does, the Cardinal does better. It goes higher, it goes lower, it gets better gain and more transparency, it's just all-round a better mike. And it even looks better. The only disadvantage is that it needs phantom, being a condensor - but that's a very minor price to pay.

Currently my Cardinals get regular rotation on my guitar cabs, vocals, and saxophone, and I use them live as well as to record.

Yeah, even with our discount, I'm guess the RE-20 will be out of our budget.
