Question HELP with poweramp setup Q's (Drivecore content)

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been looking for answers on some final questions I have about setting up a new rig.

I'm getting a Crown Drivecore XLS 2000 and most common things are on Crown's site and here, but some things I could only find a vauge answer or explination. maybe someone would be so kind as to educate me a lil further on my way...

Is it ok to only run one side of a poweramp?

Is it ok to run different impedences on the two channels of a power amp?

I've read many places that for some amps (tube) you should not have the power on w/o a load plugged into the speaker outs.

I've also read many places that other amps
(classII wiring) can be operated w/o a load on the outputs, my GK700RBmkII said this , as well as a behringer vAmpire g*itar amp I had for a while, I searched this subject also and one person on the crown forums seemed to say it was ok to run one channel and turn the other channel's att down.

also any other pertinant IMO's or IME's are appreciated I love learning about this stuff!

I run one side of a QSC amp all the time with no problems.
Solid-state power amps are durable and forgiving, and usually "smart", so I can't see any issues with running different impedances on each side, either.
Go for it.

hey mowburger, no panic ... yes it is definitely ok to ...

- run different impedances
- run only one side of the poweramp

if running only one cab I would operate the amp in bridged mode ...

Cool Running great!

It's a great poweramp for sure. I got the XLS2000, and man it's great, my cab came "alive" I've never feed it alot of watts, and it sounds really good now. I'm runnin a Korg Pandora PX4D as preamp into Y mode and bridging it to the GK410SBX+ @ 8 ohms with the HPF set at 50hz. I am really happy with my purchase. I put it in a SKB roto shallow 3 space rack, I have a vented panel on the front of the empty spot, and store ALL my cables (5) in there when transporting to and fro. Fully loaded is right at 20lbs! I'm stoked. It matches my SKB bass case. It's a good looking and great sounding rig as well -imo-

I would fully recomend this amp (Drivecore) to any one looking for a light weight, easy to use, and powerful poweramp at a good price.

FWIW I wouls say if you want the 1000, you should get the 1500. If you want the 2000, get the 2500. I say this cause the input voltage the Crown likes to see is 1.4v and some of the preamps/pres/DI 's out there wont drive the Crown hard like she likes. I'm sure mixers have no trouble tho, or any HOT outed DI or pre. My SansAmp BDDI barely made the bottom green light up, other TB'ers told me that the PreSonus stuff has a hard time pushing the Crown too. Some go the route of the Peavey lt. wt stuff for this reason. just a lil info, and a bump to my old post- lol
