I bought a pair of Mackie Thumps

Maybe this will help someone. I bought these powered speakers to use as a small PA, a quick setup practice system, monitors for my electric drum kit, or maybe to branch out to doing some...gulp....DJ work.

These used to be branded Tapco. Mackie re-branded them and charged more for them (well, they did!)

I made a "best offer" on ebay and won them for $600.00. For that, I got the speakers, 2 Gemini ST-03 speaker stands and (2) 25' XLR cables with shipping included. Everything arrived the same day and without damage.

I only have an iPod as a sound source, run through my Mackie 16ch. board and an ART 31band eq. I have read about a distortion that occurs at very low volume (just as the music becomes audible) and these speakers had it. Sounds like an FM station that is out of range. As soon as the volume increases it clears up.

I ran these for most of the day (outdoors, in the country) at pretty loud volume with no issues. They sounded clean and clear and had plenty of low end. I did not max them out but I kept them where the clip light would occasionally blink. I would guess they would do for an indoor gathering of about 100 people by themselves. They weigh 36lbs and are easy to handle.

I would have to say that they met my expectations as to quality/sound/value. Would be nice to have 1/4'' or phono inputs along with the XLR's though! I give them a thumbs up.

HI

I have 3 of them. Use them as monitors for my band. One for the drummer, one for the keyboardist who also used it in place of his amp, and one for our singer or guitarist. They work well and are inexpensive

HI

I dont know what that is. LOL. I just bought them, took them out of the box, and drag them to gigs for monitors. What's the mod?

There is a guy that posted a video on youtube that walks through installing weather stripping as a speaker gasket. I noticed that when they are cranked. a little air escapes from around the speaker. It's cheap and couldn't hurt.

Worst crap I've ever bought, the distortion is audible
At all volumes, these bring an unacceptable
standard to the table and should not be sold.
My fear is that this type of distortion will become
acceptable in the market if consumers will put up with it.
I didn't, and sent them back for a full refund.
It's up to the individual, but I for one refuse to lower the bar
On acceptable distortion levels by supporting this product.

Yeah, but there cheap. The sad thing is for alot of musicians that is the biggest factor in deciding what to buy. Then they wonder why they can't get paid decent money.

cheap isn't worth lowering standards imho,
the tapco versions didn't have the distortion issue fwiw.
also didn't have the wattage rating, but we know that there is no standard there, either...

Órale,
I own the Tapco 18 Thumps. I use them with my Mackie SR1530's. Yes, they don't have the wattage of a 18' Mackie, but, they help the 1530's on the med-lrg Casino-outdoor gig's we play. Nice thump for the price too!

I had a pair of the "Tapco" thumps and thought they were garbage. Tons of distortion, very boomy EQ and no power. They went right back in the box.
