Juan Alderete's "growl"

In the beginning of the video, most notably, he has a certain growl to his bass that I've always loved. I've tried to recreate it and checked his effects but he has too many!! He has an expensive amp, and bass, I can't possibly afford that, I'm only a college student

So, my question is, how can I get close to that sound without spending so much money. Here's what I have: a Yorkville XM200 (the two 10's) plus a 1 15" GK cheapo cab.

Any suggestions? Eq'ing or maybe an (cheap) OD pedal??

you'll need a wah wah pedal, octave pedal (sounds like a boss oc-2 to me) and some sort of overdrive...vt bass pedal would probably be closest to that tone since juan uses ampeg svt's. it would probably cost you about $200-250 to get that tone or something similar, maybe less if you can find deals on used pedals.

That VT sounds interesting, I'll look into it. BTW, could the Tech 21 Sansamp replace it? Anyone have any experiences with either product?
