THIS is a lesson in why not to contour all the mids out on your bass!

Say what? There's plenty of mids there - good punch and note definition.

That's what I mean - if you contour out all your mids, you will not sound like this!

I always loved that tune... went out and bought the LP first time I heard it.

yeah, the tone is just right, but it's also a lesson in why you need a stage tuner hooked up at all times; dude reaches for his keys at 1:19, and spends the rest of the song playing out of tune

He didn't quite have time to get the E string in tune between beats, had to get back on the groove, a little sharp on the E yay, but the groove and great tone is there, I can live with that.

He is just a victim of the sound-man. If my speakers are working right on my computer it also sounds like he is playing flat-wound strings. For that time period that seemed to be the thing for a bass. Jaco's solo album made the bass sound that way on "Donna Lee"

Okay let me re-state it, I wouldn't make my jazz bass sound that way.

Guys, your completely miss-understanding my statement. It's not the bass player that may have had his amp set that way, but the sound engineer that mixed the sound. You can sound like a million bucks up on stage and the sound engineer may make the sound going through the mains or through the recording console sound totally different. We experience this at church almost every Sunday. Sounds great on stage but not out front always.

Skitch_it!

And if George Benson comes through my area, I'd be happy to play with him. 31 years experience 20 year professional music educator, college educated, degree in music, and a jazz player, upright and electric.

Not mis-understanding your point, just disagreeing - in that I think it's a great tone, whoever dialed it in.

Yes, your always at the mercy of the soundman, all the practise, all the gear, can be instantly discounted because of a guy whom *thinks* he can mix, been there, plenty times ; )

No, I was quite surprised that you thought that tone was 'bad' full stop? Vive le difference but I myself don't really hear anything 'bad' about it, I know I've heard far worse that's for sure.

I'll agree the Benson comment was a bit off the mark and I did look at your credentials before posting, I don't doubt your accomplishments, I do have my own experience in the field of music as most others here. Put it down to my crack at jazz-humour : )
