Mic placement with AKG?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I am currently using an AKG D-112 mic to feed my bass through P.A system, I usually would D.I but after hearing an AKG on my amp when recording I opted for the Mic option. I just cant seem to get the full valve tone of my amp through the mic! It sounds great with my ear close to the amp but very different though P.A, the P.A is 4x18 Bottom end bins 2x15 mids and 2 x tweeters, its a good P.A that seems to replicate the sound well.
I am miking on the 10" speaker about 1/4 inch off center on my Marshall cab. Any help would be great

Cheers

The AKG mic is designed to scoop out the midrange and make the low end sound huge while making the high end sound very clear - great for kick drum tones and certain bass tones. Your all-valve amp is most likely making a growly/midrangey tone - somethign the D112 is not going to let through. Try a different mic.

Good bass tone starts with your hands.

+1, Although I wouldn't give up on the AKG yet.

Try pairing it with another mic; a Shure SM57 has that midrange growl Gearhead mentioned, and coupled with the D112, it might make a killer combo.

That said, I've never tried that exact combo. IMO you won't get the tone you're after with just the D112 though.

I wouldn't use a kick drum mic on a bass cab. It's not designed to pick up all the overtones that make a bass musical.
