Mixing (no PA)

Greetings fellow TB'ers
I had a practice session a few nights ago (2 guitars, drums and me, bass with only amps & cabs) and to cut to the chase, it was loud and there seemed to be clashing frequencies (such as one of the guitarists having his bass turned up to the point that I couldn't hear myself.)

I understand from my own experience, that what tone sounds good alone in your own practice, isn't necessarily good in a band mix.

Does anyone know of some good reference material to back me up to make tonal suggestions to the rest of the band?

record it and let them hear it would be my suggestion. Nothing like evidence!
