Are you using graphic EQs? Different monitors will probably not sound the same so unless you have a seperate EQ for each different brand there could be problems.

Help me I'm a newbie on live sound. The active monitors have a built in level and EQ so the mains will have their own EQ, the passive monitors will have their own EQ and the 1 active monitor will have its own EQ - am I missing something?

When dealing with monitors it is a good Idea to use Graphic EQs to help control feedback. Usually a 31 band or maybe a 15 band EQ. You then can cut freequencies that are ringing or feeding back so you can get the overall monitor volume higher.

Ok - the Mackie has a 1/4" monitor out jack the powered monitor has a 1/4" line in jack. I use speaker cable not instrument cable - correct?

Don, you wouldn't want to use a speaker cable for that connection. It is a line level signal, unbalanced, so a 1/4" instrument cable would be the right choice. Just try to keep its length as short as possible as unbalanced signals to not fair well over long distances. If you have to run it a long ways, you could take that 1/4" out and a short cable into a DI box and run a balanced xlr cable to the powered monitor assuming the powered monitor has an xlr input.

Hope this helps
