Mutilating Cone Heads
Not the hominoid aliens from nineties SNL but are there warning signs prior to blowing up a cab, or is it just an instant fine line thing where when crossed it's too late with no warning whatsoever?
Sometimes you won't hear anything.
Let's say you had a subwoofer in a folded horn, and you were running it at it's continuous top rated power. Folded horns by nature lower distortion and other artifacts. The driver can get hot and melt and you don't know until it's too late.
Another extreme is someone using a lot of distortion. If you run the driver past it ratings, and it's good tuned box, you won't always hear the driver stressing until you blow it.
FOH uses Limiters. Most DSPs allow for "Watts" or "DB" limiting.
Eminence has new type of limiter
It's actually a switching amp in reverse. It's interesting but just limiting can solve a lot of problems.
If you're using a fairly cleanish tone, you'll get a farty sound if you're pushing a conventional speaker too hard. Overdrive/distortion effects can mask this warning. Some speakers can sound more "musical" than other when pushed hard, that can also mask the warnings.
If it's heat damage, you may not hear any warning, though may experience power compression. That is the speaker seemingly getting quieter, so you turn up more, sending it more heat and cooking the voice coil.
