I beg to differ. I've been a lead singer for 30 years, and I make an effort to never get closer than two inches from the mic. Much better sound, and more even sound level. Haven't had an issue with feedback in my mic for the last 20 years. But then I have a fairly loud voice, and I use it. I can get through rehersals without a mic in a pinch...
