new microphone recommendation

Hi all

I just left one band and am joining another. I was using a sm58 beta in the old band which I wasn't thrilled with. It was OK if I was a few inches away from it but got very shrill If I was right on it (proximity effect). I could just buy a regular sm58 but thought I'd utilize the collective wisdom of TB.

My basics range tenor/baritone, not super loud singer prefer my mix to be not overly trebly with a fair bit of reverb.

I'm looking for a mic with good response at proximity effect distance, good feedback control, reasonably durable, sub $200. I have my first rehearsal with them next week so I should have a better idea of what they have for a PA etc. I have a couple of old cheap mikes I can use if need be and they may have extra mikes, but I like using my own when possible. So any suggestions on mics would be appreciated.

Thanks

I like the AKG D5 for a good all around mike at a decent price. I don't seem to have any feedback problems with them either.

I've always liked Senheisser.
The new e935 or e945 are great. Or maybe an e865.

Are you on your own monitor mix?:

If not, you should use the same thing that the other folks on the mix are using - if you don't, by the time you EQ out the feedback for both mic types, you may not have anything left.

If so, OK. My favorites are the OM7, N/D767a, and 935. I've not used the 935 enough to know where in the list it falls. A lot of folks like the PR35, but I've not yet tried one.

Here's another vote for the OM7 - when it comes to pro sound, Mr. Padrick definitely knows what he's talking about!

I provide four separate monitor mixes, each with its own 31-band EQ, and never experienced feedback or other problems when others used different microphones. But it's definitely an issue worth serious consideration.

On two occasions, I was able to obtain OM7s from Rat Sound for $150; can't hurt to look there.
