I have an old yamaha pa system. Two of the speakers are bad, they need to be replaced.
One is a yamaha 16 ohm 40 watt 10" speaker.
The other is a Yamaha 16 ohm 40 watt 12" speaker
I called the local repair shop and they quoted me $90 each to replace them. I'm wondering if I could just go with something like this and replace them in both cabinets. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-10-PA-DJ-S...3A1%7C294%3A50
Do I just need to find speakers that match the ohms? if they are 200 watt does that matter?
any other advice where I could find something that works?
thanks so much.

You'll mess up how the crossover works. It won't necessarily damage anything, it will just mess up how the speakers sound. If the PA is expecting an 8 ohm load, which your 16 ohm speakers would provide when wired in parallel, the eight ohm speakers wired in parallel would provide a four ohm load. I don't know what the minimum impedance your PA can take. Most things from the last 20 years or so can take four ohms, so you might be fine. If it can only go as low as an eight ohm load, then you risk blowing the PA.
So there are concerns and it might be more prudent to do one speaker now at the local shop and the other speaker when you can afford it. It's the safer bet.

Will your PA work at 4 ohms?
If it will, it is easier to find a 10 inch speaker in 8 ohms than 16 ohms.
But an 8 ohm speaker will probably be louder than your 16 ohm one.
It is easier to find a 12 inch speaker in 16 ohms - if you are able to make a plywood adapter (so a 12 inch speaker would fit) that would be a possibility. |

Not to be "that guy" .. I did just get some 400w per side mains for less than the ebay price of the drivers inside.

Sure that's fine.
If it is for bass, I would not get the MOD speakers. They are more suited for lead guitar. |

Something like this, but 16 ohms: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...air?sku=600547
What should it be as far as watts? |

Those speakers are farting because they aren't designed to handle bass. And putting in "real" bass speakers is useless in that cabinet, because the cabinet itself is not designed for the speaker.

I'm not using it for bass. They are pa speakers. They are for vocals and ipod songs coming out of the pa.
The speakers are farting because they are blown. I confirmed it with repair store. And, no I do not want to put "real bass" speakers in there, just 16 ohm 40 watt pa speakers.
Also, I checked the pa amp and it said the following:
8 ohms = 260 watts/ch
4 ohms= 350 watts/ch
2 ohms= STOP!
So, doesn't that mean I could use 8 ohm speakers? at like 300 watts each? |

The speaker stacks there (this is what i work with on a day-to-day basis) are per side: 2 lots of 1x18 folded horn bass bins, plus a 12+2+2+2 top cab.
In each of those 18s, the cone (speaker, driver...etc) cost around £400. They'll hurt your chest stood a few feet away.
If you buy cheap, or from ebay, you're likely to end up with absolute rubish, that wouldn't be fit to replace anything!
