Peavey SP-3 I have 2 of these OLD Peavey cabs. Anyone have any info on them? Are they worth lugging around for gigs? |
How old? If they look like this I wouldn't bother: But if they look like this then they are totally usable provided you have an EQ to tune them (also, they sound MUCH better bi-amped with an external x-over): ![]() |
Yeah, Like the first pic. Kinda figured that. Thanks for the input. |
Played hundreds of gigs through the old SP-3's. With some EQ, they can sound quite good, if you don't try and run the whole band through them with no subs. If I still had them, and cash was an issue, I'd be using them for sure. Pretty bullet proof....heavey suckers tho. |

I am probably being unfair. If I had the choice I would not use old SP3s when there are other boxes like the Yamaha Club series on the used market for very little money that outperform the SP3 by leaps and bounds. But if it's a choice between SP3s and nothing, I can make them work...it just takes EQ and Advil, both in strong doses. |
Probably 150W RMS / 300W Program though it could be slightly less. Here's a data sheet from a slightly newer version of the 2-way SP3: http://www.peavey.com/assets/literat...s/80300649.pdf |
once again, thanks for all your help. I'm thinking I should just invest in something else. |
...the actual SP-3 boxes are pretty decent and would be worthy candidates for speaker/driver upgrades...for example if you installed an Eminence Delta pro 15A the mid definition would be pretty intense, for the compression driver upgrade Parts Express has a inexpensive yet amazing 1" screw on driver Here's the compression driver http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...umber=294-2806 and heres the Eminence speaker mentioned http://www.eminence.com/speakers/spe...=Delta_Pro_15A Of course doing a retrofit like this will cost a few bucks with the added issue of heavy and bulky cabs, however if the retrofit was indeed done and you had a dedicated sub (or didn't attempt to force lows into them) you'd end up with an extremely loud yet amazingly clean pa speaker that exhibits a pretty flat response. |
