Phantom Power on my Mixer

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 5 pc. Rock band consisting of guitar, bass, keys, congas, drums, and 5 vocals. Question:
I have a Yamaha EMX5000-12 mixer and use channels 1-5 for vocals (1-4 are dynamic mics and 5 is a new headset hard line condensor mic), 6 for guitar (1 condensor mic), 7 congas (dynamic), 8 for kick (dynamic), 9 for snare (dynamic), 9-10 are stereo keys into direct 1/4s , 11 and 12 are open 1/4s for other apps all sent to the board through a 25 ft. snake. Oh ya my bass signal is back line only and non PA supported.
There is a +48V single switch to engage phantom power for cahnnels 1-8 simultaniously. If I engage it and use both types of mics (dynamic and condensor) at the same time will it cause damage? I cannot get a clear answer from any manual or forum, and a flick of 1 little switch for 8 inputs seems a little risky if there is a possible voltage spike or if some cables are not correctly wired for phantom power sends. BTW, None of my condensor mics are ribbon type.
HELP!
Would it be better to leave the +48V switch off, get an external direct box type phantom power supply to heat up my headset and guitar send?
Thanks for any input.
Mylo

No its no Problem, the dynamic Mics won´t notice, but the condensor mikes won´t work without phantom power.

Thats right. Only really old (some) outboard gear didn't like a global phantom +48. Modern stuff, including passive DI's, and dynamic mics couldn't care less if there is +48 present.
Just dont use a 20 year old Yamaha REV7 and you will be good.

Thanks for the input, I thought that they probably would'nt put an idiot button on a pro piece but you never know. Do'nt laugh, I had a few Yam rev7s back in the day and loved them. LoL

No worries. I used to have the powered mixer and do it all the time. I now have the 20 channel and still do it.

Me too. I love them. A little noisey, but great units in their day. I still have two of them, but I use them on consoles that have per ch +48.
LOL - idiot button. Thats a good one. Right next to the suck knob.
There actully is an idiot button on some consoles. Its called "solo in place" LMAO. Try using that on a live show hehe.
