Question from the floor

I have never performed on stage, I am not an engineer or a sound guy. I am standing in the audience at a small club with maybe 50 people packed into a space the size of your average mobile home.

My question is, why do sound guys insist on diming the volume on the four 10' amp stacks at every single show? I normally bring ear plugs to concerts, I just forgot today. I'm sitting here unable to make out the lyrics as a cranked SVT and 810 are backed up by some ungodly PA system and just wondering where this tradition got started. A combo could play most places I go, if the drummer would quiet down a bit, yet its always the same.

Am I missing something here?

If you're missing it, I'm missing it. The only explanation I have ever come up with is that the guy running the board, more often than not, is the first guy to admit he knows how to turn a knob. How many shows have you seen where the EQ'ing of the PA was horrible? My point exactly.

What you are missing is the fact that the idiot musicians control their amps volume not the soundman.

I just got back from the show and I'm a bit off balance for all the ringing in my ears.. Amazingly enough, once Ludo took the stage the then 75-100 people in the audience were still heard over the PA.
