What do you do between sets - take them out?
Just a couple tips: you are going to get a ton of ambient sound from drum mics and the singer's mic, so I really wouldn't worry about a "crowd mic".

Seriously, they improve the seal and keep them very snug in your ears. This helps so you keep your bass frequencies (no seal = no bass), and you don't have to pump up your volume into your ear to cancel out all the extra stuff that is getting in that you don't want.
And yes, the dangle method is a must between sets:
Hot lady: Hey there, what are those dangling from around your neck?
Codger: Oh these? Don't worry about it, I'm a serious musician.
Hot lady: I think we should copulate after your set.
Codger: Meh, we'll see.
