Replaceing 4ohm speakers with 8ohms?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone. I have an old pair of PV's 18 inch subs that we use live and I run them stereo on my amp cause they are 4 ohms and the amp cannot be bridged below 4ohms and if I bridge them out and run them parallel then I have 2 ohms. SO I was wondering if I could simply pull the black widows out and replace them with 8 ohm subs with higher power ect so I can do just that and get an extra 300 watts a piece by bridging the amp and running them parralel?? Thanks a lot!!

Probably not worth the effort. If you put a new subwoofer in that isn't designed for the cabinet it could sound worse or else the speakers could destroy themselves.

Why not just wire it/them in series and make them 8 ohm... for free?
In series it's 4x2=8 ohm
in parallel it's 4/2=2 ohm

Yes, a series cable is the way to go.

Interesting so I just plug each of those ends into each bass cab, and the single end into the amp, bridge it out and it will be bridging in 4ohms instead of 2?

pointless, as bridging into the resulting 8Ω load will net you the same power as running each 4Ω box into one side of the amp like you have now.

Im actually running one sub on each side of the amp in stereo mode which puts out 425 watts to each. If I could bridge it by using the middle post it would put out 1475 watts to them at 4 ohms. I take it that running them in series will keep it at 8 ohms and not 4 ohms?

yep, series just straight adds together, so you'd have an 8Ω load, and pretty much the same power as one cab into each side of the amp.

Exactly. I made that one and another one with Speakon® plugs.

because (to repeat) you wouldn't gain anything!

an amp bridged into 8Ω will create pretty much the same power as one getting 4Ω per side stereo.

There is no way to make two 4 ohm loads behave as one 4 ohm load with out introducing a lot of extra circuitry
