Speaker DI... I could use clarification!

Quick question: the description of the Radial JDI mentions using it as a speaker DI, and I always assumed that meant you stick it in between your head and cabinet. But the way it was phrased struck me as odd...

"...allows the JDI to be connected in parallel with a speaker. This, for instance, allows the engineer to tap the sound coming from a guitar amplifier speaker post-distortion thus adding another creative dimension."

The way that's written makes it sound like this thing is wired into a cab, and somehow capturing actual speaker distortion from the cab, as opposed to being in between an amp and cab and being used to capture the tone of raging power tubes in an SVT. So which is it?

You had it right the first time. Their text is missing the word "jack" or "output" as in "from a guitar amplifier speaker jack post-distortion".

Ah, yeah the more I looked at it, the more I suspected a typo. This sounds perfect... now I just need one of these... and a sweet tube amp.

Also check out the Countryman - I think it may be even better suited to this application.

I've used my JDI between my 400+ and NV610 before and it sounded pretty good for what it was.

400+ speaker out--> JDI--> NV610 input

No issues at all.

The Countryman indeed also does this, but I've only not switched b/c I don't want to have to worry about haggling over phantom power or keeping a battery in a DI. Just need it to work, which the JDI does well. But both are fine. And yes, I've had to argue about phantom power before...

I just engage the -30db Speaker/Parallel switch and I was golden. Didn't need to also use the -15db Input Pad.

If one wants to DI an electric, the Radial JDX is the DI that is appropriate.

You may want to review this link for some more information, as well as some warnings--apparently doing this with some amps can be dangerous to the health of some boards.

eh, i don't think i'd use that for bass. that's built to work with guitar amps. it's more like a hughes and kettner red box, which i have and is too light on the low end to work for bass very well. jdi or jdv are the radial boxes to get for bass. i used to do it with a countryman but now i'm back to micing for the most part.
