Speakers and cold weather...

What effect does cold weather have on speakers? I was wondering if it would be ok to store some speakers in my garage. The garage is not heated and is not connected to the house. Thanks.

Hi.

The cold temperature stiffens the spider and the surround to some extent, but unless You try to use 'em at full blast while frozen, no problems IME.

The moisture build up on un-treated paper cones does more damage, but AFAIK, every manufacturer treats their cones.

I'm going to try to make some room in the house for the speakers but the PA takes up a lot of room. And it's not a big PA either...just the one we use for practice.

Thank you. Our gear resides in a trailer 99% of the time although the winters are not quite as severe as those in Finland. I would be more concerned about the condensation formation when re-introduced to a warm environment (venue) although I've only experienced this once with a bass enclosure.

I've stored my gear in my unheated garage for 15 canadian winters. Never a operational problem going from -30 to heated venues. I do wear gloves to handle them though.
And they maybe thaw out in the car a bit on the way there.
