standing out in a live mix?

Sign in to disble this ad
maybe this should go in amps..

i did a search but could not find this surprisingly..
but still, when i play with a band i'm interested in what can be done to stand out in a mix like Micheal Todd manages in this clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGpaE...e=channel_page

i'm thinking specificaly about what frequencies to boost.
it strikes me as a lowered low end but lots of chunk in the lower mids?
gimmie a hand?

I like a boost at 800Hz for increased presence.

his setup at this time was a spector into an SVT. often times scooped to oblivion.

this seems to be much less so. it helps that the guitars arent super low chunky. his low mids stick out because they arent mushing up the low end. he also isnt very sub bassy. likely hanging out on the bridge pickup a little bit.

ive seen him his soaps, J's, and PJ setups. he always sounds like mic todd. he tends to cut the mix better now that he's playing J's.

personally, i like to cut the mix with grindy high mids and a little overdrive. i also beat my strings to death so its all dig all the time. thats just me.

I don't think that mix is about what frequencies of bass to boost.

I think it's about what low frequencies are cut from the guitar tone that makes room for the bass in the mix.

Sounds to me like there's about a 200hz high pass on the guitars.

+1. Coheed has brighter guitars to start with, and they're pulled back and hi-passed on the Starland Ballroom mix. Mic's tone is pretty mid-heavy, too, especially in that video. Lots of low mids. If I was working with similar-minded guitarists, a wide bump centred anywhere from 300hz to 500hz would be just the ticket, depending on where the guitars are getting their body.

Also, taking into account that this is more than likely a "board mix" it would be much eaiser to get a good clear sound out of the bass, not having to hear the room. Probably remixed from a ptools multi-track after the fact. Live that bands guitars are loud and low, and the bass thunders IIRC. Amazing similarities to the Starland, and the room I work. Exit signs are even in the same place LOL.

yeah, i do like that the guitars are mixed modestly, they sound very good especialy with everything working together.

so far people have said 800hz as a personal preference and 300-500hz, so i'll give those a try.

it's times like this i wish i could more easily fine tune the mids on my vt pedal, but i'll figure it out!
