I play serveral clubs that never run any bass guitar through the PA, so I cant imagine having to constantly rely on the PA to give me a stage sound I trully love. If your current stage rig cant be adjusted to give you the stage sound you like w/o PA embellishment, perhaps its time to consider upgrading to gear that does.

at op - ask dude why. if they dont put any bass in the mains ever, stop bothering the dude. (quickly)

as for the amp plus mic AND di

seriously ????????
just for "omg what if it breaks ???"

if so,

2 mics for every singing band member
2 mics for every drum,
2 mic'd identical cabs for every guitarist(what if the cab blows you gotta have amp sound from guitar)
another PA fully set up in case the main blows.

and unless youre playing the Garden,

an extra soundman in case the #1 guy gets arrested for ripping you a new one with a tuning fork.

So I played at this venue again. Different sound guy, still miked the cab, but the guy actually knew how to use the giant side-fill monitors and run the sound system properly so I didn't have to turn my amp up that much at all. Just got a good tone from the speaker and let the sound system do the rest. Makes more sense to me now. I will request this guy again next time we play there.
