Subwoofer Speaker Question

Sign in to disble this ad
We have a pair of Samson RS-18S subwoofers and they have served us well. However, at the last gig one stopped working. I pulled the speaker and found that I get no response using a 9 volt battery to test the speaker. It appears that it's blown. Here is the question. What is the OHM of the 18" speaker? The speaker says Samson RS-18S-8 400 watts. It does not tell me the ohms, but the jack plate says 400 watts, 4 ohms. I assumed that it was a 4 ohm speaker based on the jack plate but I saw an EBAY listing for a rebuilt one of these speakers listing it as 8 ohms and 6.3 ohm DCR. Does the 8 in the speaker model mean 8 ohms? I did remove the speaker from the other sub and measured 4 ohms using an ohm-meter (I believe on ohm-meter will always read lower that the rating) Can the crossover change the ohms from 8 to 4 ohms? I want to replace the speaker but don't know what ohms to buy.

according to samson its a 4 ohm speaker and no you cant use the crossover to change the ohms and you dont want to mix and match. I would contact samson audio and ask for a replacement sub, or ask about rebuilds with authentic parts.

+1

Gotta have subs with matching speakers so they sound good together. Pretty much the same thing with any multiple speaker cab.
