Tone help: Upright sound on electric

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, if this is the wrong spot let me know. I have a country-pop gig, something I've never really done before........

... but does anyone have tips for getting a semi-upright sound on an electric? Some songs call for it.

I know muting with the free fingers on the left hand helps a bit with rounding out/shortening sustain. but if anyone does this kinda thing regularly and has any input that would be rad! Technique/tone-wise etc....

Thank you.

Assuming you don't want to put tape-wounds on your bass, I'd say turn the bass EQ all the way up, treble up quite a bit, not too much on the mids. Then palm-mute or put a scrunchy just south of the nut.

There's hundreds of double bass pickups for real double basses and thousands of mics - and no one can agree on one.

Double basses are fretless, so there's a lot of technique there.

look for: Convolution Bass
On youtube for one example of what can be done with fretless electric.

Are Ashbory still sold? They sound realistic, look on youtube for these.

Put foam under the strings for a faster decay. I like rotosounds trubass strings i think they help get that type of sound. Also mimic a Db players attack, try hitting your strings between the bottom of the neck and the 12th frett. And EQ the rest.

This will get you close but there is no replacement for the real thing. But Kala UBASS is very close to my ear!

1. Flatwounds
2. Foam mute
3. Fingerstyle
4. Bass up, treble down
5. Enjoy
