Vocal "effect" question

Sign in to disble this ad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZlWBCtevjI

On parts of this song, his voice sounds effected. When he comes in in the chorus, the bridge part, and a few other parts. When he says get in the pit... (around 1:40) I am really ignorant when it comes to vocals and effects pertaining to vocals.

Does anyone know what he is using there, or an inexpensive way to get the same effect on stage?

Thanks.

I think 2 effects are in play. First the gain on the pre-amp is raised and the voice is distorted. Second a multiband compressor is used and a single midrange bandwidth is selected creating a telephone midrange effect.
Hope this helps.

i was going to say they used a lo-fi effect to get there

or they could have done it old school and did the megaphone into a microphone trick

Yep, a megaphone will do these exact things to a human voice.

thanks for the info. We are definitely looking for 'lo-tech' as we'd only use it on one or two songs. Would any megaphone do? Looking online there are megaphones from $25 to upward of $300. Is there a certain feature of the megaphone that does it?

Send a message via AIM to guroove
the cheapest megaphone you can find at radio shack will do this just fine.

TC Helicon makes a vocal effects processor that is a foot pedal...this allows the singer to toggle and cycle through effects at his/her discretion.

Heres the link:http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...dal?sku=180118

I think this nails what you are looking for...the singer can simply tap his foot and activate/deactivate whatever effect, and can store 4 or 5 at a time...megaphone is one of them.

Check youtube for further details..
