I trust a few of you folks here for advise and I don't want to sign up for another forum.

My band has a gig this Friday. We are the second band and have no time to really dial stuff in. We are bringing an amp and two speakers to use as our monitor system which is sorely needed at this place. The monitor system is my Genz Benz 3.0-8T and 12T extention cab. I know it's weird but the house bass amp is passable and we REALLY need a monitor system.

The mixing board is a Yamaha MG166CX. Below is a picture of the mixing board. It has monitor outputs as well as Aux 1 and 2 sends. Each instrument/mic channel has a level control. There is no individual level control for the signals to monitors. Can we simply use the Aux output to go to our monitor sytem? We need a little less of the drummer to the monitor mix and more of the guitar and vox.

Many thanks for attacking this odd question.

yes - you can use the aux output on the mixer to run any instrument amp. The only thing you'll have to watch is overdriving the inputs - a mixing console can put out much more signal than any instrument. It should work out just fine if you're being careful.

Fantastic! I'll take your advice.

This board does have monitor output controls, jacks, selector switches, etc. Take a look at the manual:

http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/...c_en_om_a0.pdf

You can still use the Aux outs but there's no real need.

Different 'monitor'. Those are just duplicating what's going to the headphones, it's the monitor section for the operator of the console, or for the control room monitors if you are using this for recording.

Use an aux send (or 2) for monitor mixes.

Use the power amp in jack on the back of your Shuttle. That's a line level input that bypasses all the instrument level and oriented stuff leaving the master volume in place for your overall monitor volume.

Yep...that hit me about 5 AM. Helps if I read the whole manual. The aforementioned "monitor" mix is the full monty. Better off using available Aux sends and assigning individual mic channels as desired.

All understood and clear now. I'm looking forward to attacking this setup when our time comes.

MANY thanks!

The system worked fantastic! It was tranparent and easy to work with. We felt we had great control the entire time. Sadly, we are too selfish to let the band following us use it. We felt pretty bad for them as the lost drummer looked around to see what was happeneing and the singer/rythm player forged on through songs with the rest of the band knowing. It was tense.

We've offered to help the bar owner find a real monitor system.
