Yamaha EMX212 main + montor load

On my Yamaha EMX212 powered mixer, I understand I can acheive 220W per side using a 4 ohm load. I get this from using the main+montor mode with 2* 8 ohm wedges on the monitors and 2* 8ohm bins for the mains. I would like to be able to use the main out jacks at the front via a separate power amp and speakers as these are supposed to be at line level. Am I able to do this safely or will this reduce load on the unit and cause harm to it?

The Mains and Monitor outs on that amp are both +4 (line level). Yes, you can use the Main Outs to supply a power amp/speakers. I have the EMX312, and I run my Main Outs to a QSC 1804 power amp then to my Yammy S4115V's. I use the left speaker out to run monitors - no problem.

You should be aware that Yamaha is rather optimistic about their stated power ratings. That 220 watts you are expecting with a 4 ohm load is "before clipping", not nominal. In practice, you will be getting considerably less wattage.
