...I think I'm going to retire the mic and go DI again.
the reason, you ask? well while the mic does sound awesome and has this throaty goodness i just don't get in a regular di, i've noticed that on some of my gigs the high end is just not there. used to like it that way and i still do to an extent. however, i've been wanting just a little more pop in the high end lately. sometimes i get it with the mic, sometimes i don't. so through listening tests, i've found that a couple soundmen i work with just plug it in and leave it flat. it's a great sound, and it sounds a lot like the cab in a mix, but as i worked on eqing the recordings i did with it to make the high end pop more, it became apparent to me that my new vt deluxe can cop pretty much that exact tone without any extra eq.
don't know how it can do it, but it does. and it's a lot easier to plug in a mic cable to the vt deluxe than futz with the mic, z bar, etc. however, it does look very cool, so maybe i'll just put it up there for looks

of course, now i'm bummed that i've let down my pal trevor. but you know, once you see your $325 mic fall from the top of an svt 810, it does make you think twice about it. it landed on a soft bag so it was ok, but if that happened during the gig it would have been concrete.

Are You going to be as passionate about using just a DI as You have been about using just a mic? (and about using a DI before that IIRC )

I do enough gigs where i have to go straight into the system, and it's those times where you learn the difference between good and bad DI's. I need to get a VTbass, or something of that nature (the Oxford or Leeds, most likely). But i'll always keep a good mic handy, and methinks so will you! Go forth and groove!

mudfuzz, you make a valid point. i don't want a lot of highs, just a little. and you'll notice that the vtd does have a blue checker color scheme, so in a way you were right

Bongomania is riding giant mole rats...
JimmyM is no longer using a mic...
What next? Jaco is going to rise from the dead, reclaim and sell his bass of doom and use the proceeds to purchase an effects collection that would put JMJ, Bootsy Collins, and Justin Chancilor combined to shame while also acquiring a bass that would put Jean Baudin to shame? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
