12 fret and beyond........

Sign in to disble this ad
I have lately beening playing alot of notes in the higher part of the bass (aroud the 7th 11th fret) on mostly the A-D-G string but i cna't seem to find any way to incorperate those higher notes past the 12th fret. Do you guys have any tips on how i could start to incorperate the octave up section in your playing or how you started playing in the upper register? When i learn a song i always take something from that song and use in my own music so if you could recommend a song, no just a riff(i don't want some 3 minute Jaco peice because i have tried that) where the most of the song is played on the higher notes(not just a couple of fills) thatnks guys

Im asking how you incorperate the higher notes on the fret board because i can't seem to do while making it sound songish. Also any song recomendations so i can see how a proffesional does it.

He wants to know how to use both low and above 12th fret notes within a cohesive line. I have the same problem, I'd like to hear some suggestions.

My instructor told me "we don't get payed to play beyond the 12th fret."

He was joking, but like Jazzin', he said that's basically where you solo.

usually just a fill...

Comong thing is a tri tone slide then fill to the b7 & 3rd...

if in C... slide up to E on the 14th frett of D string and Bb on 15th frett of G

try the star spangled banner.

I can't play up there, my fret buzzes and no sustain, think i need a setup.

Opening to Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith is played above the 12th.

Again, though, mostly for soloing

Find some website that shows you the scales...basically you can use any notes within a certain scale to make it sound nice.

and above 12th fret is not always soloing, try a song like Phantom Lord (Metallica - Kill Em All) that has a part above 12 in it, but only on the E string.

you can always try to transcribe stuff like the Sweet CHild O Mine intro (Guns and Roses) to bass notes and than play that somewhere over 12th fret..that's bound to include more than one string at least.

If I do an octave fill, I can make it up there. That, soloing, and noodling are the only times I got up there.

a good ol slide up the octave and play 32nd notes or whatever is a nice way to transition into a chorus or something sometimes

I wouldn't say that that area of the fretboard is "just for soloing" Just think, the open G string is the same note as the 15th fret of the E string, and you probably play up there for basslines. Learn scales and arpeggios across the whole range of the fretboard with different fingerings to really understand how everthing past the 12th fret relates to whats going on in places that you are more comfortable playing.

I think that playing riffs up around the 12th fret or higher can't be forced. You really have to have a song that calls for playing in that high register. And, IMO, most songs will call for a nice bass groove below the 12th fret. Writing some cool fills is a nice way to start incorporating the higher register. Other than that, check out some Victor Wooten tapping stuff. Tapping is a great way to bring out the higher register of a bass along with a lower register groove at the same time.
