No picks here, I've been playing with my index and middle fingers the entire time I've played bass. The three finger technique I want to learn is ring-middle-index-ring-middle-index, as that is most comfortable to me. I've tried ring-middle-index-middle and even though it comes in sets of 4 which makes it easier to groove with initially, it still uses my middle finger just as much as a 2 finger technique would, so my middle finger gets tired just as quickly, and my speed is about the same. As far as using my thumb, I need that for muting. I've tried using it before but its just too hard to stop all the sympathetic vibrations and it sounds bad.
I'd like to reemphasize that even though its nice to be able to play faster, I don't really care about shredding. I want to learn 3 finger technique because it seems like it could increase my endurance by spreading the work out across 3 fingers instead of 2 (and being able to play 16ths at faster tempos would be cool too

). I've heard lots of folk on here tell people they should just practice with 2 fingers until they get faster and stronger, but it seems like a close minded stance. If I can already play faster and longer using this new skill, then why not go with that one?
on a related note, do any of you play ONLY using 3 finger technique? It seems like most people who do use 3 finger technique only bust it out occasionally on particularly challenging lines. If I can, I'd like to play primarily using 3 fingers that way it feels natural and not like some awkward frankenstein method that I keep locked in the basement.
