3 finger technique help plz!

Sign in to disble this ad
hey all,

I am just wondering if anyone knows any useful videos or articles about 3 finger technique, I used to play primarily with a pick and after awhile I started working on finger technique and learned to love the tone and feel of it. I am currently working more and more towards only fingers, but in my current band I need to play a lot faster than I can manage with 2 fingers, I have tried playing with 3 but seem to only get triplets down rather than just a speedier straight rhythm.

As always thanks in advance

Read the Metal Bass sticky at the top of the Techniques forum, it explains how to 3-finger. You might pick up some useful info, too.

make sure you can start 3 note groups on any of the 3 fingers youre using and also practice playing odd-numbered groups of notes across different strings, making sure that you can start each group on each finger. for example, play 4 note groups across the A and D strings, with 2 notes on A and 2 on D while keeping the RMI pattern. if you do this you can pretty much just figure out what you need to do on your own. it also helps to isolate the ring and index fingers so you can get good transitions between them; your playing will sound less like groups of triplets and more like a stream of notes.

i really feel as though instructional videos on youtube and such dont really describe this in detail enough. and also, for the love of god dont try the dreaded RMIM pattern. it makes your middle finger work doubly hard and will never be as fast as straight RMI

Like said above practice groups of 4 either each finger involved on your plucking hand. Like anything start slow and use songs you already know to practice this. It will make them seem more difficult to play at first.

The other thing I found helpful was to practice songs using just 1 finger... example playing songs with just the RING finger entirely... it was so difficult for me but helped a lot. Then playing with 2 RING and MIDDLE still challenging. Then all three.

At first aside from playing the songs you already know stick with a single string and try to break out of the gallop triplet sound. Groups of 4 and start slow until it is smooth. Long term goal is to be able to skip strings and keep the pattern. Obviously if your raking up (down note wise) dragging a finger will work better than forcing that pattern.

I know this isn't the best answer, but learning 'Welcome Home' by Coheed and Cambria helped my 3 finger skills. Not my favorite band and not my favorite song, but the slow and steady triplets will help for sure.

After getting the slow triplets clean, move on to gallops. You'll know where to go from there based on how comfortable you are with your speed. Hope I could help!

More fingers equates to more speed through better options of dexterity.
It just means the more fingers the better you can organise them to work better.

Look at it this was if you take a car that has the horse power to do 100 mph, welding it to another of the same model does not mean you go 200mph, and of course if you weld 5 of them together you do not go at 500mph. What you get is more power not speed, so more can be accomplished in that area. Your hands are similar in that more fingers equates to more power not speed, but you can divide that power and organise it to work for you as dexterity, not speed. You get the effect of speed through better technique and lack of fatigue in the hands.

I don't know if you are making the same mistake that I made but I started with only being able to do "gallops" (a lot like Iron Maiden riffs). These are written at 2 sixteenth + 1 eighth note. Triplet is a more even feel and I think they are a good place to start.

Eighth notes are perfect for practicing 3 finger technique. Use a metronome!

I'm at the beginning stage of this technique too, knowing the difference between a gallop and a triplet is a world of difference.

You have to organise your thinking if it does not start to happen.
