3 Finger or thumb and 2 fingers on chords?

Sign in to disble this ad
On my 6 string I have been practicing some chords. I just got the John Myung video and noticed that he plays with 3 fingers which would be the standard technique. I grew up playing 3 finger banjo and when I started doing chords it felt very comfortable playing thumb on the bass note and picking the 2 higher notes with my fingers. Just curious if this is a bad habit. Any other time playing I always have used my fingers. Thanks

if it sounds good and you can do it easily its probably not a bad habit.
for chords i usually use 2 fingers and my thumb, but sometimes 3 fingers and my thumb, if theres that many notes.

Nothing is written in stone.
Do what works for you, do what works for the music.
There are situations when one or the other are more comfortable.
Me, I use both, but the thumb+2 fingers more frequently.

to play the full chord at once, i go geddy and strum them with my fingers, gives it a sweet tone, and its easy.

if you mean plucking the notes in the chord individually i use two fingers and my thumb, thumb for the root note, and the fingers for the rest.

Strumming chords gives too much of a guitary, trebly sound for my taste. I'll use the two finger/three finger plus thumb approach for most chordal situations, which allows me to play a separate bassline from the chord at the same time with my thumb and play a rhythmic chord line (bossa nova-type stuff)

Thanks everyone I have decided to stay with the thumb and 2 finger technique. I am doing the root/bass note with the thumb and using the 2 fingers on the high stings. I have been practicing a couple chord patterns and this seems to work with me.
