Accidently bending low strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone accidently bend the lower strings when you're just trying to fret them because of their low tension? Its not like bending a half step or anything, just a tiny bend and it bothers me. I was thinking if I try using my fingertips closer to the tips this wouldn't happen, also not pressing the strings down as hard. Anyone got any other suggestions?
Thanks

Sounds about right, this used to happen to me on my six string, but I just worked on it for a few weeks and I got rid of it.

It happens sometimes to me, but not so much anymore; I'm less sloppy now

How did you guys fix it? By using your fingers closer to the tips or not pressing down as hard or did you do it a different way?

Thanks again for the help

I repositioned my thumb slightly to the right, which reduced the angle of my fingers (more vertical less diagonal), which reduced the pressure on the strings. I also make it a point to think about comfortable elbow placement nowadays. This has all helped me reduce the slight pull on the string I am susceptible of doing.

I then drilled it. Lots. I still have the habit, but it's not really noticeable.

I sometimes do the same thing, but it's generally my fingers compensating for my bass being slightly flat and I'm just making it in tune subconcsiously.

All bassists do it occasionally. I even saw Stu Hamm do it in an instructional video. Just try to concentrate on applying downward pressure and not lateral pressure and it should take care of itself for the most part.

The main way to correct it in my mind is something Tom Mendel [killer teacher] helped drill into me-Focus and Observation. Go to your practice area and focus on NOT bending and observing what is going on with your technique that is causing it. I would recommend playing scales w/playing 4 eighth notes per pitch while focusing on not bending. It took me awhile, but it helps.

If you find your doing it in the same spot heaps, practise that area slowly so that you can think about waht you are doing and not bend it
