| adapt rock a blly acoustic bass to electric?

has anyone tried to adapt the slap bass style like Slam Stewart or Rock a Billy bassists like Johnny Hatton, to electric? I can sort of do it by substituting the slap with a muted string, but it doesn't have the same feel. Ideas?
PS- I prefer finger style approach to this, because doing it electric bass slap style, where the thumb slap is subbing for the upright fretboard slap, means that the rest of the notes don't come out clearly. But I'm open...
