Adjacent String question (Led Zep Nobodys Fault But Mine)

Sign in to disble this ad
Being relatively new, I find one thing I struggle with is playing notes in rapid succession that rest on adjacent strings in same fret. This has surfaced in learning "Nobodys Fault But Mine" by Zep in the riff:

G--------------------------------
D--------------------------------
A-------5---5----5--7-----------
E--------5-5--5-5--------------- (might be a little off)

What I am trying to do is almost bar the 5th fret and "roll" my finger over but I have yet to master this technique. Any thoughts on ideas on how others might play this?

Don't bar it, in this case you're probably better off using one finger per string. For example you could use your index finger on the 5th fret of the E string, middle on 5th fret of the A string, and pinky on the 7th freth.

I agree with Nicoli.

you might also want to consider playing the A as an open string, rather than on the fifth fret of the E string. This fingering would allow the 16th notes of this phrase to flow smoother.

And you'll want to slightly bend the Ds in that riff.

Much simpler and sounds better just using the open A string.

I am going to give that a shot, seems like it would be easier. Thanks!

yeah, I play it using the open A.

also the opening riff (the E-D, B-A G E pull-off riff) to me sounds smoother played at the 2nd fret using open D and A strings.

have to watch the live Zep vid to catch how JPJ plays it.
